Download it free noweval But who has actually been saying they’re dead? 1) Companies who stand to gain from you not using them, such as video resume companies eval While video resumes and paper resumes will both help you on your job search, one doesn’t negate the other as you might think after seeing the above tweet. They’re both personal job search marketing tools that can make an impact when used appropriately. 2) Recruiters who don’t want to deal with paper resumes anymore And I don’t blame them. Since I started JobMob back in 2006, I’ve received hundreds of resumes via email and have viewed many more online. I’m not a recruiter, but if I had to store all those as paper somewhere, my home office would need a second floor. As it is, whenever a job seeker hands me their resume at a networking event or job fair, I’ll always tell them to save it for others at the event without forgetting to email it to me later. 3) Personal branding experts, like me In my 5 Most Interesting Notes From the 2010 Israeli Recruitment Conference, I mentioned that- Morit Rozen even said that “the resume is going to die” â€" I disagree; more on that another time â€" and that soon, recruiters will just want names and use the Internet to find everything else. But even if I’ve been recommending for years that you regularly build your brand online through social media, personal websites, blogging, or whatever combination makes the most sense for you, that still doesn’t mean you don’t need a paper resume any more. The truth Reasons why you still need a paper resume: Even in 2015, many companies still aren’t fully digital, especially smaller companies who make up the majority of any major job search market Be different. When everything is going virtual, the few people who successfully manage both the online and the offline will really standout. (This is why some people are still using fax machines to get their resumes in the door) Digital resumes get lost just as easily as paper ones. Resume copies you bring to interviews might be the only ones in the room, and the interviewers will appreciate that when it happens, especially when they go on to take notes directly on your copies. Like a business card, a resume crisply printed on high quality paper leaves a professional impression wherever you go: networking event or job fair. Many of them (and their parents) find this time to be filled with anxiety. Will I be competitive? Will I get a job that inspires me (and pays the bills)? Will I make enough to move out on my own and start the life I’ve always dreamed of? Your first job will probably follow this predictable emotional arc. Got the job:             Woo hoo!                                               I am on my way to fame and glory! First Day:                         Holy #$%**                      This is terrifying â€" I’ll never get it all straight. Three months:       I can breathe now.                     I think I got this. Six months:                 I rock!                               The boss noticed me today and said “nice job.” Ten months:             OMG â€" kill me now.                 I am literally going to die of boredom. We’ve all been there. Entry level jobs, by definition, require less sophisticated reasoning skills and usually require lots of repetitive and dull â€" but necessary tasks. But entry level workers who submit to the boredom are in grave danger of scuttling their career â€" at least with this company. Managers monitor entry level workers carefully for attitude and excellence, both of which are critical to success. A worker who disdains the work he’s given will probably disdain the work at any level he rises to. Contempt for doing the basics usually signals that the worker is more interested in what she can get, rather than what she can give. I love what actor Ashton Kutcher  said in a beautifully written Teen’s Choice Award acceptance  speech in 2013. (Here’s a link to the transcript of the speech.) He spoke directly to the millions of young fans in the audience, saying, “My name is actually not even Ashton. Ashton is my middle name. My first name’s Chris. And it always has been. It got changed when I was like 19 and I became an actor.” He then went on to “share some really amazing things I learned when I was Chris….” He outlines all the menial jobs he held as a teenager, including “a job in a factory sweeping Cheerio dust off the floor.” He gives a tribute to entry level work, saying, “I never had a job in my life that I was better than. I was always just lucky to have a job. Every job I had was a stepping stone to my next job and I never quit my job before I had my next job.” Kutcher is a new father, and I hope he passes on those values to his child. If he does, he’ll create the hardest-working trust fund baby in Hollywood. What some entry level workers don’t understand is that their current job is always an audition for their next job. You have important work to do: master the skills you need right now, do a great job on your assignments, and take every chance you can to learn and do more. If you’ve done a good job, and managed to smile and enjoy yourself, you’ll have earned a recommendation for your next job, whether it’s in your current company or your next.

Even when you know and seek this “secret” there are still a lot of moving parts that can impact various stages of any successful effort. Knowing this secret will help you think about what is important. Knowing this secret will help you focus on delivering the actual value instead of the perceived value. Knowing how to use this secret will help you communicate better, engage more effectively and stand out in your career. The Secret is as simple as thinking about, and if needed, asking one question. The question can be asked of yourself for you to mull over and evaluate. Or depending upon your relationship with the other person you may want to ask them directly. What is this secret? Simple… Seek the Selfish Motivation of the person you are looking to work with or otherwise engage. You would not likely ask someone… “What’s your selfish motivation here?” However, you can come up with nicer and less direct ways to ask the same thing. For example, you could ask “In a perfect world what would you expect as the outcome here?” The key is to truly seek the Atavistic Self-Interest of the person you are working with and to truly understand what they value. Value is in the eye of the Beholder When you know what the other person values you can more effectively decide if you can provide what they are looking for.  Ask the question, either directly or  to yourself,  and then decide if you have the products, skills or services to meet their specific goals. Once you know what they value you can create a plan to describe what you can do to help them achieve them. The key point here is what THEY value. How do you find out? Simple. He later implemented the use of it company wide as he thought it made our emails look more professional. I did not get a raise for it but sometimes simple recognition is enough for your self esteem.19) Discuss AccomplishmentsYou might think that talking about your accomplishments at work can come across as bragging. When you are constantly integrating this details into daily conversations, you may certainly sound boastful. On the other hand, if you never bring these topics into discussions, you may sound as though you don’t care about your accomplishments or that you are ashamed of them.For example, if you attended a convention related to the job or earned an award for your work in the field, you should certainly let your boss know.20) ParticipateA truly important way to impress your boss is to participate in your job as much as you can. You certainly don’t need to make your job the focus of your entire life. There are 15 pieces of advice from YEC (Young Enterpreneur Council). In case you havent heard of it before, here ya go: The  Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC)  is an invite-only nonprofit organization comprised of the world’s most promising young entrepreneurs. In partnership with Citi, the YEC recently launched  #StartupLab, a free virtual mentorship program that helps millions of entrepreneurs start and grow businesses via live video chats, an expert content library and email lessons Tours of Duty: The New Employer-Employee Compact Harvard Business Review Written by  Reid Hoffman, Ben Casnocha, and Chris Yeh (follow these guys!) This is a long read, but stick with it and read the comments to see whether others think this will work or not. These are the three proposed ideas for the new compact: (1) hiring employees for defined “tours of duty,” (2) encouraging, even subsidizing, the building of employee networks outside the organization, and (3) creating active alumni networks that facilitate career-long relationships between employers and former employees It is my opinion that the authors are not suggesting eliminating stable jobs but instead, adding certainty to the term of the job; and with that comes short term stability. Some of their ideas sound quite foreign to those craving the olden days. In many ways, what they are suggesting may sound like a open marriage arrangement.  A lot of things have to happen for these ideas to really work. Here are just a few that come to mind: We need a better healthcare system (or at least a system everyone has reasonable access to) Employers have to stop stifling the entrepreneurial spirit of employees Workers of all ages and levels need to embrace the concept of staying connected. There is no entitlement baked into this. The lackadaisical  American workers have to go. We have to get hungry. What I mean is that we have to eliminate the mindset that currently exists among tenured teachers, government employees and union workers. No one is safe unless they do good work.
